hey anonymous, i approach my sketches in the most simple way possible. i choose a view and cut out the frame that i want in my head. i start with the center of the composition and build my sketch from there, outlining every object i see. i try to force three-dimensionality by overdescribing setbacks (windows, doors, walls) and i also try to keep shapes simple. Beyond that I try to reproduce what i see as truthfully as possible. I don't design anything but work more like a reporter who tries to describe things as accurately as possible. I am not attempting to make a beautiful sketch, but an honest one. my years of sketching with people like alex puvilland made me be interested in composition, texture, linequality, contrast etc...the basics really, but most of all to not worry about whether somebody will like the endresult or not. the question is, is it honest and truthful. That doesn't mean photorealistic, but it will prevent you from applying cheap effects that you do because you know that people will love it. So my modus operatus for my sketchbook became: Get rid of all fear of drawing and let it flow...it's quite therapeutic actually!
